European Student Orchestra 2019

BOZAR – Brussels, Belgium

August 27th – September 1st 2019

After the huge success of the ESO projects during ESOF’17 and ESOF’18, the first official European Student Orchestra will be organised. This edition will be special in all different ways. It is the first standalone project of the ESO under the new official identification and will be a teaser for what is to come in summer 2020. Home base will be Brussels, the capital of Europe, with the support of the European Commission and BOZAR Centre For Fine Arts.

Check below for more details and for how to register yourself!

Registrations are closed!

For all intersted musicians:

In general

The first ESO-project will kick off in Brussels, the European capital, under the professional artistic director Benjamin Haemhouts. We will gather to rehearse and prepare for the first official concert of ESO in BOZAR, Centre for fine arts Brussels. Our musical programme consists of:

  • Concerto Romanesc by Ligeti
  • Symphony no. 1 by Brahms

There is a procedural audition for all applicants in the form of a short video. Don’t let this scare you off! We believe via video audition, we give everyone an equal chance to apply (rather than first come, first served-principle) and the opportunity to motivate their application! That’s is right, we are looking for students with a lot of motivation to join the ESO as we believe that the atmosphere within the orchestra is extremely important! So in the video we will ask you to play (a part of) a piece of choice and to explain your motivation to participate in this new project!

Good news: when you get selected for the ESO’19 project, you will get ‘a wildcard’ to the ESO’20 concert tour! So only ONE audition to enjoy the fun TWICE!

Arrival & Departure

We welcome you on Tuesday 27th of August 2019. The ESO team will guide to the check-in and lunch. Afterwards we will start our first rehearsal of the week. In total there are 4 tutti rehearsals and 1 sectional rehearsal scheduled.
After the concert (Sunday 1/09) we will lunch together and afterwards we will say our “see you next years”.

The first official concert of the ESO will take place on Sunday 1st of September, 11am in the HENRY LE BOEUF HALL at BOZAR Centre for fine Arts. This concert will be the kick-off concert of a new season of BOZAR ‘NEXT GENERATION’.

More details and information to come!

Application procedure

Step 1: register yourself via the next tab ‘registration’. Here we ask some basic information about yourself and your musical experience.

Please note, all registrations received after the deadline will be assessed but all candidates that applied in time will get priority.

Step 2: record a video that counts as your audition and send it to us via WhatsApp. We do not only focus on your musical talent but your enthusiasm and motivation to join the ESO is at least equally important! So we expect a 3’-video in which you shortly motivate your choice to apply (max. 1’) and play us a piece of your choice (max. 2’).

Please beware, 2 minutes is not long, so please select your piece carefully. The goal is to show your basic musical capabilities in your video. (For example: Schindler’s List is not a good option)

Your registration is only finalised when we received your video. If there is no video and only a registration form completed, you will not be considered for the selection.

Sidenote: if you have the ambition to play first part for any instrument (i.e. concert maestro, leader of string sections, first flute, first trumpet…) we will kindly ask you for a slightly more extended video: max 2’ motivation (including your explanation why you aspire the first part) and max. 4′ piece of choice.

Step 3: wait patiently. We will process all videos and make a selection

Step 4: all applicants that fulfilled the registration form and sent a video will be contacted with the news whether or not you got selected in May.

Step 5: for everyone selected, we ask a cost for the entire project 2019 of 50 euro per person, to be paid by bank transfer.

  • The price includes:
    • Accommodation: 5 nights in youth hostel in centre of Brussels
    • Catering: accommodation includes full pension, drinks are provided during the rehearsals
